Individual Researchers
Dr Ashmeetha Manilall (Ashmeetha.Manilall@wits.ac.za)
About the Research
Dr Ashmeetha Manilall’s research focuses on cardiovascular physiology and inflammation–immunology in both clinical and experimental models. The work examines how inflammatory signalling, infection, and cellular stress contribute to cardiac dysfunction, particularly in adult heart failure and neonatal disease.
Research also explores links between maternal sleep, inflammation, and pregnancy outcomes, using molecular, genetic, and physiological approaches in interdisciplinary collaborations.
Dr Khanyisile Kgoadi (khanyisile.kgoadi@wits.ac.za)
TB and TB-HIV Immunometabolism Research Theme
About the Research
The Kgoadi Lab led by principal investigator Dr Khanyisile Kgoadi conducts scientific research on Tuberculosis (TB) Immunology (including vaccine development) and the Immunometabolism effects of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) on TB Pathogenesis. The research investigates host-pathogen interactions with focus on; (1) the mechanisms associated with the increased risk of TB development in people living with HIV and (2) Immune responses to TB vaccines.
