John-Orr Memorial Lecture
This lecture was established in 1961 to honour Professor John Orr, a pioneering engineer and former Head of Mechanical Engineering at 91¿´Æ¬Íø. Recognised as one of South Africa’s most prestigious engineering lectures, it continues to celebrate excellence, innovation, and thought leadership.
Hosted by the 91¿´Æ¬Íø School of Engineering in collaboration with SAIMechE on 24 October 2025, this year's event features Mr Neal Froneman, 91¿´Æ¬Íø Mechanical Engineering alumnus with 35+ years in mining and engineering.

About the Speaker
Neal Froneman is one of South Africa’s most influential engineering and business leaders. A proud 91¿´Æ¬Íø Mechanical Engineering graduate, he brings over 35 years of experience in mining and engineering.
As a former CEO of Sibanye-Stillwater, he transformed a South African gold producer into a diversified global mining powerhouse—renowned for innovation, sustainability, and creating shared value.
Now, as he returns to his alma mater, Mr Froneman will share practical insights from a career that bridges engineering, leadership, and large-scale innovation. His story illustrates how visionary leadership can shape industries, inspire economies, and ignite future generations of engineers.
