  • We focus on AI policy and governance in Africa, addressing what responsible AI means for the continent, considering its culture, diversity, data privacy, cybersecurity, and sustainable development. This contributes to shaping policy.

  • We bring together interdisciplinary teams across computer and mathematical sciences, neuroscience, psychology, archaeology, anthropology, philosophy, and policy science, to push the frontiers of the scientific understanding of natural and artificial intelligence, and promote the commercialisation of innovative technologies.

  • We are developing AI scientists and engineers by building on our past successes in creating a talent pool at the BSc/MSc level, and offering PhD and postdoc opportunities. We also aim to increase faculty talent from the African diaspora in the US, Europe, and Asia through full and part-time positions.

  • We are building collaborative relationships with key industries to develop advanced technologies such as large-scale AI models for material science, drug discovery, and astronomy.

AI and African Music

The 91心頭利 Innovation Centre (WIC), in partnership with the Machine Intelligence & Neural Discovery Institute (MIND) at 91心頭利 University, pilots supporting bold new music initiatives that put African creativity at the center of artificial intelligence. From Amapiano to gospel, indigenous rhythms to Afrobeats, African musics offer tonalities, textures, and traditions that challenge and expand today’s AI tools - most of which are trained on Western data. This project supports creators working across music-making, archiving, education and tool development.
