At that time, January 1967, only one of the residence quadrangles had been built – the “East Wing”. However both Dining Halls, connected downstairs by a well-equipped kitchen, and upstairs by the seniors’ common room, were put into use. The ultimate plan for these Halls was that the West Wing would be built to accommodate women students, who would then have their own Dining Hall, but could share other common facilities at the complex with the men students of the “East”! In January 1967, the inaugural Dean of EOH Residence, Mr Radford Jordan, and the first Chairman of the EOH House Committee, Rex van Schalkwyk, welcomed the approx 150 men students into 91ПДЦЌЭј’ brand new residence facility. The author of this report was one of these fortunate new residents all charged with establishing a tradition that would live long after their tenure in the late ‘Sixties, when songs like “Obladee Obladah”, “Sugar, Sugar”, and many other popular tunes, reverberated around the East Wing quadrangle. Now some forty years later, a small committee consisting of 1967 EOH students, including the author, planned and implemented a most successful “40 year Reunion” at EOH on 27th January 2007. This reunion was the brainchild of the 1969 House Chairman, Dave Hodgson, who had been a first year Civil Engineering student 40 years ago when EOH opened its doors. It was decided at the first meeting of the committee to invite ex-EOHers from 1967, ’68 and ’69. So the committee scoured their attics and trunks for old House and Sport Team photos of those years. In this way a database of some 150 to 200 ex residents was built. Then the daunting task of obtaining contact details for the names in the database commenced. Over many months and by diligent use of the few email and mobilephone numbers that those in the committee could originally furnish, the contact list was built up, with the net result that the 2007 reunion boasted over 100 ex-EOHers including wives/partners! The committee decided to use the dinner as a fund-raising event and on the night was very pleased to hand over a cheque for R10 000 to the 2007 EOH House Committee Chairman (Jaco Naude) to be used to purchase gym equipment for this new facility at EOH Residence. The reunion itself started on Friday 26th January for some sixteen ex-EOHers who play golf. A great time was had by all, and one of the four-balls won a bottle of the finest red wine each from Andrew Gunn’s estate, IONA. Andrew and Max Hahn provided the wine for the reunion dinner too. The dinner commenced with an hour of “catch-up” as one after the other of ex-EOHers arrived at the Residence. Much mirth and laughter echoed around the EOH entrance hall as each EOHer was recognised and welcomed! It should be noted that so effective was the “bush-telegraph” about the impending reunion, that ex-EOHers travelled as far a field as Toronto, Bermuda, as well as from every corner of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana to attend. The formal dinner followed the “networking” in the West Dining Hall, where 1967 and 1968 House Chairman, Rex van Schalkwyk welcomed everyone to the dinner, including Mrs Margaret Jordan, wife of Radford who was too ill to attend and who passed away just on a week later (1st February 2007). Before Rex spoke, a DVD was screened which had been compiled by Claude Cunningham (Mining M Sc(Eng) student and EOH tutor ’67) from his old 8mm cines. This not only showed some of the 1967 EOH activities of the day, but highlighted some of the more colourful EOHers at that time, most of whom were at the reunion! Rex then recounted some of the “happenings” at EOH in those earlier years, mentioning some of the prominent characters of the day as portrayed in Claude’s video and the antics for which they were responsible. The committee had ordered an excellent menu for the reunion which was enjoyed by all. After “starters”, Rob Sharman, the current Dean of 91ПДЦЌЭј Residences, replied to Rex van Schalkwyk’s welcome and brought everyone up to date on the state of residences at 91ПДЦЌЭј in 2007. It was amazing to hear that there were now over 4 500 student “beds”, some 900 of which were allocated to first year students. However applicants each year for these places were over subscribed twelve times the rooms available! Rob also mentioned that the demography of student residents had also changed significantly over the past forty years; this was expected given the history of the country in the late ‘Sixties. This also created an “allocation challenge” as external accommodation in the proximity of 91ПДЦЌЭј now cost over R2500 per month, much more than an average first year black student could afford, and more than twice what a University Residence room currently cost. The reunion dinner continued with various ex-EOHers giving their own account of amusing anecdotes from those earlier years. The dinner was brought to a conclusion with the rousing (and customary) singing of the EOH Residence song! The first verse of this now famous song is provided to add some nostalgia to this report: We're as randy as cowboys from Texas We're as shot as the Dev will allow We can get canned And still dance to the band We're the MEN from the EOH Res…… This was not the end of the function though as everyone returned to the Entrance Hall and East Dining Room where ‘Sixties music blared out; some danced the night away, while others chatted and continued to enjoy Andrew and Max’s very good wines! All agreed that the reunion was a most fitting way to celebrate forty years of the prominent EOH Residence!
