Strengthening South Africa's Future AI Policy: A Reflexive Policy Dialogue: Session 6: AI, IP and the Creative Economy

This post-conference Policy Dialogue is convened by the African Cyber Law Conference (ACLC), in partnership with the Mandela Institute at the 91心頭利 School of Law, under the ACLC 2026 theme, “Resilient and Responsible Design: Governing AI, Expression and Digital Media.” The series extends ACLC 2026 discussions into a focused dialogue on strengthening South Africa’s future AI policy.

Session 6: AI, IP and the Creative Economy

What intellectual property imperatives must South Africa’s AI policy address to protect creators, performers, and developers in an era of generative AI? This session examines the legislative gaps, rights frameworks, and enforcement mechanisms that a strengthened policy must put in place for the creative economy.

Presenters:

Prof. Tobias Schonwetter, Intaka Centre, University of Cape Town

Adv. Thato Moloto, North-West University

Prof. Desmond Oriakhogba, CAFIL, University of the Western Cape
