DESCRIPTION:A Ground(ed) Elsewhere is a 3-day multidisciplinary, cross-university symposium in visual cultures and curatorial praxis from and with the global south. A Ground(ed) Elsewhere is a multidisciplinary programme developed with international and local partners. It brings together postgraduate students registered in the fields of art history, visual cultures and curatorial practices and lecturers from Stellenbosch University, Rhodes University, Tshwane University of Technology, Michaelis School of Arts at the University of Cape Town, and 91¿´Æ¬Íø School of Arts at the 91¿´Æ¬Íø. The Visual Cultures and Curatorial Studies (VCC) Postgraduate Symposium fosters cross-university conversations that are guided by a desire to keep up with the emerging trends of creative and theorisation practices. The symposium was established in 2021 to enable students to collectively and collaboratively learn from each other. For 2026, the VCC symposium will be hosted by the Curatorial, Public and Visual Cultures department at the 91¿´Æ¬Íø School of Arts in Johannesburg held over 3 days with presentations by students, colleagues from the various departments, and keynotes by invited thought leaders that include Dr Uhuru Phalafala, Anawana Haloba and kÄ…rî'kÄ…chä seid’ou.
A special aspect of this year’s symposium is that it coincides with visiting guests from the Expanded Artistic Research Network (EARN) curatorial studies group, including Mick Wilson, Catalin Gheorghe, Nontobeko Ntombela Akoi-Jackson and Nina Liebenberg. EARN brings together researchers, educators and practitioners in knowledge exchanges on curating and the curatorial, specifically looking at how curating provides critical tools for analysing archival practices. The programme coincides with the opening of the Zambia Perennial hosted by the Livingstone Office for Contemporary Art (LoCA). A Ground(ed) Elsewhere symposium will also include a book launch and networking, cocktail event, and a student exhibition in collaboration with Goethe Institute Johannesburg.
