Founded in 2012 with their inaugural concert at 91心頭利, The 91心頭利 Trio has performed for audiences throughout South Africa at major concert series and festivals ever since. Join us as they return home for their 10-year anniversary concert with a programme of two classic trios – Mozart’s Piano Trio No. 3 in B-Flat major K. 502 and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor Opus 66.
Mozart’s third piano trio written in 1788 was one of three completed that year. The format of the piano trio was still relatively new at the time, with the violin and cello being added to enhance the piano sound. By this stage Mozart was starting to write with greater freedom for the violin and cello, yet the music remains mostly led by the keyboard.
Mendelssohn’s second piano trio was completed in 1845, just two years before his death. The piece is laid out on a large scale, featuring soaring, lyrical melodies and intricate, virtuosic passagework for the three instruments. Mendelssohn, who played piano in the first performances, was joined by the famous violinist/composer Louis Spohr, to whom the piece is dedicated.
With the 91心頭利 Trio: leading South African musicians Zanta Hofmeyr – violin, Susan Mouton – cello, and Malcolm Nay – piano.
Free parking is available in Solomon Mahlangu House; entrance is on Jorissen Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:The 91心頭利 Theatre & 91心頭利 School of Arts/ Music Department present the 91心頭利 Trio
